Your Adventure Starts Here…

“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure…” Chris McCandless

It’s been an unbelievable summer here in southwest Wales. But Autumn is fast approaching, a great time to get into the outdoors, looking for adventure!

Some might say we are the perfect base for an adventure holiday, nestled neatly in the countryside between the epic coastal playground of Pembrokeshire and the outdoor pursuits mecca of Carmarthenshire.

Fantastic kayaking, surfing, mountain biking, hillwalking and every other extreme activity you can imagine are within an hour of us, catering for all levels, abilities and adrenaline addictions! We are only a few short hours’ drive from London, conveniently located at the end of the M4 motorway.

Surfing at Freshwater West

Surfing at Freshwater West

Prevailing wind-blown, dramatic west-facing beaches Freshwater West and Whitesands are famous for their breaks. Their reliability has attracted a long-standing community of local surfers, a merry band of blonde haired veterans that are repeatedly drawn back to our shores from far flung lands, and hungry gromit surfers, eager to cut their teeth with the big boys.

Surfboards and wetsuits can be hired at Whitesands Bay and Newgale, where lessons for all level of surfer can also be arranged. Magic Seaweed offer an up-to-date Pembrokeshire surf report, as well as great recent photography from the waves.

Mountain Biking

The highlight of the area’s mountain biking trails has to be Brechfa forest. So much work and millions of pounds have gone into the trails there over the past few years, that it is now one of the UK’s leading mountain bike destinations. It has everything from tame green and blue rides, a perfect introduction to mountain biking, through to the “Black Raven Trail,” complete with massive jumps and huge bends and wall rides.

“I can’t recommend throwing yourself off a large rock into the stormy seas enough! You couldn’t get me out of the water.”                                                        Comedian and TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones

The Pembrokeshire coast offers ample opportunity for thrills, spills, exploration and adventure. Known as one of the prime spots for coasteering in the UK, the wild and beautiful coastline of Pembrokeshire is the perfect place to experience the exhilaration of cliff jumping, swimming into sea caves and cliff traversing that is this adrenaline packed adventure sport. TYF Adventure in St Davids are the main operators, promoting environmental education and sustainability through adventure. It is a safe and fun way to experience the Pembrokeshire coastline from an entirely different angle.

No matter what your experience level, there is adventure to be had exploring the Pembrokeshire Coast by sea kayak. If your are looking for a relaxing paddle, there are quiet, pretty harbours and sheltered coves to explore, and rock gardens around the cliffs and islands to bob in and out of.

For the adrenaline junkies with the skills to go with it, there are booming swells, tidal races and ‘The Bitches,‘ and only the truly adventurous will hear the call of the exposed off-shore islands of Ramsey, Skomer and South Bishop. The intrepid are rewarded with spectacular wildlife and intriguing sea caves.

If it’s knarly rapids or long, winding river trips you are looking for, Carmarthenshire has a few jewels in its crown. The Teifi river offers a long, winding wilderness river experience, from the hills to the sea. There are a couple of more fast-flowing spots, where the inexperienced might want to portage. As the Teifi passes through Llandysul town, you are into some serious whitewater. This section is home to one of Wales’ best canoe-slalom courses, and the Llandysul Paddlers, who offer guided trips and taster days on the Teifi. Further afield, the Brecon Beacons runoff has created some spectacular steep creeks and big volume rivers.

SONY DSCAnd thats not all, we have some of the best climbing, hillwalking, gorge walking, river swimming, land-yachting, windsurfing, and paddle-boarding that the UK has to offer.  The scope for adventure is endless!

We are surfers, climbers, kayakers, and hillwalkers ourselves, so we are well placed to offer insider local information about where to go, depending on conditions. With our new drying room, shower and bike storage facility, we are well-equipped to welcome back muddy, wet and cold guests on an adrenaline high!!

Once the day is done, warm up by the fire, or relax around the barbecue and recount the days’ epics, adventures and stories, a beer in hand. Does this sound like your kind of holiday? Well, get your mates together, pack the car to the rafters with boards, boats, wetsuits, bikes, harnesses and helmets, and head West. An adventure holiday with Bronhaul Cottages will not disappoint.
